I think the explicit theme of the movie is racism, but the more important underlying theme is hate.

I saw American History X when I was in Australia too but I couldn’t finish watching it because at that point of time in my life, the racist swearing was too much for me to handle.

I watched it again quite recently and like you, the movie left an impact on me. I agree with you on Ed Norton’s acting ability. He’s awesome.
