I just finished a team meeting with the head of the department. And I realised something on why I tend to get negative when communicating with my colleagues from India.
Body language is an integral part of face-to-face communication between individuals. And the Indians from India have a habit of shaking their heads from left to right when they are agreeing with you.
Having grown up in Singapore when shaking your head left to right means disagreement and up and down to mean agreement, I believe I am subconsciously interpreting their body language in such a way that I am receiving signals of disagreement even though the content of their speech is agreement.
I have been in this company for about six months, but the cultural programming in my brain is still taking some time to adapt.
